UTS gets with the Times

Sel & Michelle here! :)

This was last weeks blogpost a tad late as Michelle had no access to the blog and I was away at Camp!

Monday: Postering and Whiteboarding Frenzy

Week 3 at UTS got off to promising start. Josel and I, bubbling with enthusiasm, set out on our regular Monday morning postering and whiteboarding frenzy. We hit up the walls and noticeboards of the Tower building, Bon Marche and Haymart campus. We even ventured out into new territory postering up Building 10 as well.

Monday/ Tuesday: Battle with the Union:

The biggest challenge this week was getting the UTS Union to support us in setting up a ‘Time Student News” stall at the end of the week. After enquiring with the staff at the Union desk and writing a personal email to Laura Earl (the union’s event organiser) to inform her of the magazine4students service and it’s value to students and academic staff, our request was sadly rejected. Unfortunately, our promotion directly clashed with another newspaper promotion co-ordinated with the union and to our disappointment there was no room for compromise. However, this was not going to deter our ambitions and we were set on finding an alternative way to reach the students and achieve our goals.

Thursday: Final Glee Rehearsal:

On a positive note, the Glee Club provided a sneak peak of their upcoming flash mob routine and it looks and sounds fantastic =) The president of the Glee club also agreed to help book times with the union for us, so a big thank you goes out to him for his help. YAY!!!!

Friday: Vox Pox/ Lolly Guessing competition:

Everyone loves a sweet deal and UTS lolly competition has been a highlight that not only informs students and staff of M4S’s sweet discounts but also allows indulgence of their sweet tooths too lol ;p This has not only been incredibly effective in engaging students and getting them to come up to us voluntarily but has also put them in a more receptive state of mind when listening to our M4S pitch. This also encouraged them to follow us online by getting them to check the facebook page for the results

We had originally planed to do vox pox for monkey news whilst roaming around campus conducting our lolly guessing competition. We thought we would draw on a current news event like the Kony campaign to garner student opinions, with the best opinion becoming the Face of M4S TIME magazine on FB. To our surprise, many students were unaware of Kony, so we intend to further follow up this story in week 4.

All in all Week 3 was challenging but successful none the less. It reminded us that where there is a will, there is a way and I think we did a good job in adapting to find equally good ways of getting M4S’s service and voice heard and enjoyed amongst the UTS students and staff.
